Richard Somerset Mackie
Writer, historian, teacher
I have a special interest in British Columbia stories, biography, and local history. I have written six books on BC history and biography. Two of them, Trading Beyond the Mountains (1997) and Island Timber (2000) won the Lieutenant-Governor's Prize, and Island Timber was also short-listed for the Haig-Brown prize.
I lecture frequently on aspects of my historical work, and I speak at historical meetings and writers' festivals throughout British Columbia.
I offer a limited service in manuscript evaluation and substantive editing. Here is an unsolicited response to an article I edited for BC Studies:
"I just received my copy of BC Studies. It looks great, and I am so glad I got to be part of it! I want to say a big thank you for all your input on my article. In general, I have learned a lot about writing and publication from your advice. I am a better author and historian because of your patience, attention, and insight, and I very much appreciate the work you put into editing this piece."
This site provides some basic information about myself, my teaching, books, and speaking engagements.
